Lorraine G. Hiatt, Environmental Gerontologist
Dr. Lorraine G. Hiatt, Ph.D., is an environmental gerontologist with 50 years of experience in planning, post-occupancy research, and design consultation. She has completed 800 projects with more than 100 different architectural firms throughout the U.S.
Lorraine approaches environmental design as an opportunity to inspire the talents of stakeholders by addressing guiding principles and assisting sponsor-driven visions of services into specific space and technology details. Through data and galleries, she expedites planning and the inclusion of features to evoke elderly people’s capabilities while optimizing the lives of related users such as peers, family care, and service partners. Through judicious use of evidence-based design, she has facilitated advances in “bio-care,” including bathroom and shower designs, and safer uses by elders and their caregivers, exceeding the many short-comings of ADA Guidelines for these populations.
Her works have been featured in design publications including EFA, Leading Age,and Argentum. Some of her recent projects include Allegheny Senior Services, Affordable Housing, Philadelphia; St. John’s on the Lake, Milwaukee; Mease Manor Memory Care, Florida; State Veterans Community Living Center, Nevada and Rhode Island; and Veterans Homes and Parker in Monroe, New Jersey.
